2001 U.S. aerials champ, Emily Cook, was sidelined just weeks before the 2002 Games and missed the last two seasons after a horrifying fall that had her on crutches and multiple surgeries for two years, but returned to snow for preseason training for 2005 – including the intense camp in San Diego with the Navy SEALs. Despite the former gymnast’s preseason surgery in Summer 2003, she was on skis by the end of 2004 season and resumed flips and twists into the splash pool in June 2004, and competed on the World Cup in '05. Determination is an aerialist named Emily Cook.
Cook wrote a stirring chapter to her career during the '05 season. Simply returning to World Cup action after nearly 2-1/2 years (since Jan. 17, 2002) on the sideline was huge, but she produced four top-10s and turned-in the best performance of her three trips to World Championships. Her favorite moments, though, came at the 2006 Olympic site when Kelly Hilliman, Kate Reed and Cook went 5-6-7 in the Olympic test event. She said it "gave us the confidence to know that having three American girls in a row [in the Olympics] at this site is possible, only next time we expect it to be on the podium."
